Are you insured when carrying bikes on the back of your car?

When you need to make a claim insurance can be tricky, especially if you were carrying bikes on the back of your car. Here’s a few things you need to know:

  • Normally, if someone drives into the back of you they are at fault and you can make a claim. However, if your brake lights, tail lights or indicators are obscured and you don’t have a bike light board, your insurance company could decide that you’re at fault.
  • You are also breaking the laws for carrying bikes without bike rack lights or a supplementry plate. This may invalidate your insurance and you could be liable for repairs to both vehicles.
  • Good bikes aren’t cheap and if you’re involved in an accident and don’t have bike rack lights or a supplementry number plate, it could be very expensive.

Don’t risk it!

Talk to your insurance company and check if you’re covered when carrying bikes. Also, ask them what would happen if you don’t have bike rack lights or a supplementary plate.

Better still! Keep you, your family and your bikes safe – get a Safelite.
