How to Safely Load Multiple Bikes on Your Bike Carriers & Racks
Heading off for a family weekend away or a group ride with mates? Carrying more than one bike changes the game. Extra weight, extra width, and extra responsibility all come into play. The good news is that with the right rack and a bit of know-how, you can load multiple bikes securely, keep your vehicle balanced, and stay firmly on the right side of New Zealand law.
Choosing a Rack That Can Handle the Load
Not every bike carrier is built for a full load of bikes. Before you stack three or four bikes on the back of your car, check your rack's weight rating and make sure it's designed for multiple bikes rather than just one. A rack that's straining under the load is a rack that's more likely to fail on the motorway.
Balancing Weight Distribution
Once you've got a rack rated for the job, think about how you load it. A few practical tips:
- Heaviest bikes closest to the vehicle to keep the centre of gravity stable.
- Alternate handlebar direction so bikes don't clash with each other during travel.
- Secure every wheel and frame with the straps provided, checking them again after the first few kilometres.
Don't Forget: Loaded Bikes Can Hide Your Lights and Plate
Here's the part many Kiwi drivers overlook. Once your rack is loaded with bikes, it's almost certain your number plate, brake lights, and indicators will be partially or fully obscured. Under NZTA rules, that's a problem, and not a small one.
What the Law Actually Says
If your lights or number plate are obscured while carrying bikes, you're breaking the law. Your lights need to be clearly visible from at least 200 metres in clear weather, and it's your responsibility to keep them clean and working. Supplementary number plates must be official NZTA plates, fixed to a hard, flat surface, and illuminated at night. Loose plates or homemade cardboard signs simply won't cut it. Offences can carry 20 to 25 demerit points each, along with fines, so this isn't something to leave to chance.
The Simple Fix: A Bike Rack Light Board
This is exactly why Safelite designed the Safelite Panel, a bike rack light board built specifically for Kiwi drivers carrying bikes. It slots onto virtually every bike rack sold in NZ, with mounting holes suited to inner and outer distances from 31 cm to 52 cm. It's fitted in seconds using two heavy-duty bungee cords with easy-lock toggles (no tools required), and it plugs straight into any standard NZ towbar socket with its 1.4 m cable and flat 7-pin trailer plug.
It also comes with pre-drilled holes and bolts ready for your NZTA supplementary number plate, so you can tick that compliance box at the same time. Made from UV-stable, waterproof aluminium composite, it's built to handle rain, dust, salt spray, and everyday New Zealand road knocks, and it's backed by a full two-year warranty.
Loading Up with Confidence
Carrying multiple bikes doesn't need to be stressful. Choose a rack rated for the load, distribute weight sensibly, double check your straps, and finish the job by making sure your lights and plate stay visible with a proper bike rack light board. Get these basics right and you'll protect your bikes, your vehicle, and everyone else on the road, all while staying legal from driveway to destination.
