Our Story

A close call

In 2016, Murray and Alan the founders of Safelite were travelling over the Desert Road at night. It was raining but visibility was good and we could see a dim red light in front of us. Suddenly, with no indicating, brake lights or warning, the car braked and pulled into a parking area.

If we’d been travelling any closer, things could have gone badly wrong for us and the family in front.

Being good Kiwis, we went back to tell them their rear lights weren’t working. In fact, they were working but the bikes they were carrying completely blocked their rear lights, indicators and number plate, leaving only one rear light visible.

The family hadn’t realised the danger they were in and couldn’t just dump the bikes. So, we offered to follow behind them as a rear guard until our turn off from SH1. We left them with our fingers crossed and hoped they got home safely to Wellington.

The founders of safelite are Murray Butcher, an engineer/designer and Dr Alan McGee, a retired university researcher. Following that near-accident, they decided to do something to improve safety for cyclists who carry bikes at the back of cars and came up with the Safelite.

Designed and Made in New Zealand

Unlike other bike light boards, SAFELITE meets all NZTA requirements and is considered to be “… a good contribution to road safety.”

It’s lightweight, yet strong, easily slots on to any bike rack, and plugs into any standard trailer connector (See our video).

Safelite also comes with a full two-year warranty.
